Geert Wilders, leader of the far right party PVV, has lied during an English spoken interview with German media about the perpetrator of the murder of Pim Fortuyn. According to Wilders, whose party is a notorious distributor of fake news, a radical muslim murdered Pim Fortuyn. In reality he was murdered by the lone Dutch gunmen Volkert van der G.

The interview in which Wilders is lying was done by Europa Magazin for the German television ARD. Pim Fortuyn was murdered on the 6th of may 2002 by Volkert van der G. outside of a radio studio in Hilversum. Volkert was sentenced to 18 years in prison and was released in 2014. PVV politicians are notorious for spreading false information to criminalise minorities in the Netherlands and inciting hatred towards muslims.
“I don’t know if you know Pim Fortuyn, Pim Fortuyn was the hero who ehm ehm… before i started my own party, adressing the problems that i’m adressing now. Unfortunately he was killed and murdered by a radical muslim some time ago”, Wilders said in the interview which lasted 40 minutes.
Rightwing leader Wilders initially did not responded to the false information he has spread about the murder of Pim Fortuyn, but later said he had misspoken and meant to say Theo van Gogh, the islamophobe filmmaker. It’s an odd explanation, since that part of the interview focusses mostly on Pim Fortuyn. Critics think Wilders has trouble to distinguish facts from fiction due to his social isolation.
